Brian Talks
Brian May, May 1998, Clyde 1
Mott The Hoople was really our first experience of life on the road, and a pretty blinding experience it was, I must say. It's always remained close to my heart, cos' we grew up on that tour, we had to, it was just insanity, and to survive you had to adapt, you had to become a rock'n'roll kind of animal &endash; in the good sense of the word, you know. And, yeah, it was phenomenal. And I used to watch them do All The Way From Memphis every night, and every night the place would erupt, it was like an earthquake. They really were a fantastic band live. Should have stayed together, I have to say.

Lyrics
Good evening Memphis
How are we doing
Let's do it
Good
Forgot my six string razor
And I hit the sky
Half way to Memphis
'Fore I realised
Hey
I rang the information
My axe was cold
They said she rides a train
Down to Oriole
Well it's a mighty long way down the dusty trail
And the sun burns hot on the cold steel rail
And I look like a bum and I crawl like a snail
All the way from Memphis
I got to Oriole, you know
It took a month
And there was my guitar
Electric junk
Some dude says rock 'n' rollers
You're all the same
Man that's your instrument
I felt so ashamed
Now it's a mighty long way down rock 'n' roll
Through the Bradford Cities and the Oriole
And you look like a star but you're still on the dole
All the way from Memphis, wow
Hey
All the way from Memphis
Oooh, gonna ride that train
Wooh-hoo, wooh-wooh, wooh-wooh
Wooh-wooh, wooh-wooh, wooh-wooh
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Of course, we weren't always superstars
There was a time when we were just ordinary commoners, just like you
Thank you Mr Hoople
And we used to eat
Well it's a mighty long way down rock 'n' roll, let's hear it
From the Liverpool Docks to the Hollywood Bowl
And you climb up the mountains and you fall down the holes
All the way from Memphis
Well it's a mighty long way down rock 'n' roll
And your name gets hot and your heart grows old
And you gotta stay a young man, you can never get old
All the way from Memphis
Well it's a mighty long way down rock 'n' roll
From the Bradford Cities and the Oriole
And you look like a star but you're still on parole
All the way from Memphis (yeah, that's where I come from)
Wow, all the way from Memphis
All the way from Memphis (all the way from Memphis)
All the way from Memphis (all the way from Memphis)
All the way from Memphis (all the way from Memphis)
All the way from Memphis (all the way from Memphis)
Hey, hey
Wow
OK
Yeah
Thank you and good night
