Released exclusively by the Official International Queen Fan Club after The Cross performed a show for their UK Christmas party (on 5 December 1990 at the Astoria Theatre in London), The Official Bootleg is one of the few Queen-related albums that is hardest to come by: it was only released on cassette to members of the fan club, and has never been reissued or given a CD treatment. Consequently, it remains unheard by the vast majority of Queen fans, and many remain blissfully unaware of how The Cross sounded as a live band. This and the Live In Germany cassette were perfect examples of how the band were able to hone their craft and become a pretty decent live act.
Spike Edney was conspicuously absent from this show, though Roger explained that he was off performing with Bob Geldof in Warsaw; Mike Moran filled in ably instead. Of course, the most obvious star of the show was toward the end, just prior to I'm In Love With My Car, when the crowd started chanting, "Brian May! Brian May!" Brian had been on stage earlier in the day handing out competition prizes, so was known to have been present, but Roger still coyly responded: "Who? Never heard of him!" Brian then came out to rapturous applause, joining The Cross for a four song mini-set of I'm In Love With My Car, Let Me Out, Tie Your Mother Down, and Lucille, even taking lead vocal for the middle two songs, at least when he could remember to go to the center stage microphone. All in all, an enjoyable night.
